Aviva Endean is a performance-maker, clarinettist and composer interested in expanding the audience experience of sound by creating intimate, unusual and spatially engaged contexts for listening. She challenges standard forms and contexts for performance in order to create new and unexpected ways of engaging with her work. Her performance practice spans a wide variety of musical styles and performance contexts including experimental and improvised music, theatre, creating immersive sonic environments, chamber music, folk music and inter-arts collaborations.
Aviva is the recipient of numerous Awards and grants including the prestigious Freedman Music Fellowship, JUMP mentorship program, the Keith and Elizabeth Murdoch Travelling scholarship, the Willem Van Otterloo memorial award, the Atheneum prize for chamber music and the Lionel Gell Merit award. Her work has been nominted for the EG music Awards ‘best Avant-garde/experimental act’ 2013, and the Aria Awards ‘Best World Music album’ 2014 and she has been described as “Australia’s most versatile clarinettist” Real Time 2014. Her debut solo album ‘cinder : ember : ashes’ is due to be released on acclaimed Norwegian label SOFA in 2018.
In 2014, Aviva was awarded a Professional Partnerships scholarship (MCM/VCA/Art Vic), which enabled her to work as emerging artist in residence at Chamber Made during which time she made ‘A Face Like Yours’ a sound work for video, foam earplugs and viewer, and presented a Little Operations event ‘The Perfect Human’ for 3 a cappella female vocalists and lo-fi lighting with Carolyn Connors and Jenny Barnes.
