Minotaur The Boats score by David Young

Chamber Made Opera, Writers Victoria and the Wheeler Centre put the focus on librettists in July 2013.

We offered a practical and thorough workshop for aspiring and emerging librettists, along with a free talk at the Wheeler Centre all about the business of writing librettos.

The five-day workshop was comprised of a series of practical exercises, lecture-style lessons and robust discussions, delivered by prolific Australian librettists, composers, conductors, dramaturges and directors.

Confirmed speakers/lecturers included director, writer, and dramaturg Margaret Cameron; writer, librettist and critic Alison Croggon; conductor and trombone player with the MSO, Brett Kelly; composer, librettist and tenor Angus Grant; librettist and writer Kate Schmitt; soprano Deborah Kayser; and composer and Chamber Made Opera Artistic Director, David Young .

The week’s activities also included a ‘speed-dating’ event: a very immediate and practical opportunity for the workshop participants to engage in one-on-one conversations with established and well-known composers.

Participants were asked to email a one-page bio and a small sample of their writing to caroline [at] chambermadeopera [dot] com by 5pm on Thursday 30 May.

This initiative was supported the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, and is presented in partnership with Writers Victoria.
