Where music, sound and performance meet.
Interrogating the intersections of music, sound and contemporary performance, Chamber Made makes intimate works that defy, challenge and renegotiate artform boundaries, speaking directly to a 21st century Australia enriched by the meeting and intersection of cultures.
The company is led by acclaimed performance-maker and director Tamara Saulwick, whose works are defined by a deep, abiding engagement with sound and music. Saulwick’s distinctive style has developed over many years of dedicated collaborations with some of Australia’s leading music practitioners, positioning her perfectly to lead and shape Chamber Made’s complex and nuanced cross-artform work and creative processes.
Chamber Made brings new audiences to music, and new ways of experiencing music to our audiences. The company is renowned for cultivating adventurous collaborations between composers, sound artists, directors, performance-makers and media artists, disrupting and rewriting conventions to discover new forms of expression. Bringing contemporary composition and performance dramaturgy together in ever-shifting forms, our works have been presented in theatres, recital halls, lounge-rooms, galleries, on iPads and online.
In addition to creating new works, Chamber Made is dedicated to making an enduring contribution to the broader Australian performing arts landscape. We create a locale for engagement, research, collaboration and innovation in cross-artform practice.
Since it was founded in 1988, Chamber Made has produced 46 world premieres, 5 Australian premieres and a total of 55 innovative works across 100 performance seasons, engaging countless artists both local and international. Beyond its Melbourne base, Chamber Made works have been widely performed in regional Victoria, across Australia and as part of festivals and tours to over ten countries, including China, Colombia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Korea and Venezuala.
Chamber Made has multi-year, re-current funding from the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne and has an enduring support base from philanthropic and earned income. Chamber Made is based in a studio managed by the City of Melbourne’s Meat Market tenancy program.
Chamber Made Opera was established in 1988 by stage director Douglas Horton and Stephen Armstrong, its founding General Manager. Based in Melbourne it has been recognised as the only performing arts company in Australia exclusively dedicated to the creation and presentation of entirely original, new chamber opera.
Between 1998 – 2014 the company was steered by Artistic Director Douglas Horton (1988– 2009), then David Young (2009 – 2013). From 2013 – 2016 the company was led by Creative Director Tim Stitz working with four Artistic Associates: Sarah Kriegler, Tamara Saulwick, Christie Stott and Erkki Veltheim. In early 2017, the Tamara Saulwick was appointed Artistic Director, to work closely alongside Tim Stitz in his role as Creative Director. In 2018 new Executive Producer Kylie McRae joined Tamara to help lead the company into its fourth decade.
Chamber Made has collaboration and interdisciplinary practice at its heart. Since 2014 an overt focus on chamber opera has evolved into a broader remit of creating works that re-imagine how music and performance can converge. The works emerging from this model are engaging and complex. In each case the presentation mode and format emerges out of a deep consideration of the relationship between form and content, expression and reception.
Chamber Made acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and pays its respects to their Elders past and present.
