Where music, sound, theatre and performance meet.
CHAMBER MADE operates at the nexus of contemporary performance, music and sound to make intimate works that grapple with the resonant themes of our times. The company is renowned for redefining artform boundaries and producing works that emerge from a deep collaborative dialogue across artform disciplines. Bringing contemporary composition and performance dramaturgy together in ever-shifting forms, our works have been presented in theatres, recital halls, lounge-rooms, galleries, on iPads and online.
In addition to creating new works, Chamber Made is dedicated to making an enduring contribution to the broader Australian performing arts landscape. We create a locale for engagement, research, collaboration and innovation in cross-artform practice.
Chamber Made is led by Artistic Director Tamara Saulwick, working in collaboration with a range of individual artists, organisations and communities. Chamber Made offers a provocation for musicians, composers, sound artists, theatre directors and performance-makers who wish to explore beyond the borders of their artform and, through collaboration, to deepen and re-imagine the possibilities of their practice.
Chamber Made has presented over 90 performance seasons in Australia, NZ, Asia, Europe, USA and South America, and has extensive experience working on international tours, co-productions and residencies. The company has commissioned over 40 new Australian works and engaged countless artists since it was founded in 1988.
Chamber Made has multi-year, re-current funding from the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne and has an enduring support base from philanthropic and earned income.
Chamber Made is assisted by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and the City of Melbourne, and receives funds from Creative Partnerships Australia.
Chamber Made is based in a studio managed by the City of Melbourne’s Meat Market tenancy program.
Chamber Made Opera was established in 1988 by stage director Douglas Horton and Stephen Armstrong, its founding General Manager. Based in Melbourne it has been recognised as the only performing arts company in Australia exclusively dedicated to the creation and presentation of entirely original, new chamber opera.
Between 1998 – 2014 the company was steered by Artistic Director Douglas Horton (1988– 2009), then David Young (2009 – 2014).
From 2014 – 2016 the company adopted a new organisational and artistic model led by Creative Director Tim Stitz working with four Artistic Associates: Sarah Kriegler, Tamara Saulwick, Christie Stott and Erkki Veltheim. In early 2017, the company structure evolved further when Tamara Saulwick was appointed Artistic Director, to work closely alongside Tim Stitz in his existing role as Creative Director.
Chamber Made has collaboration and interdisciplinary practice at its heart. Since 2014 an overt focus on chamber opera has evolved into a broader remit of creating works that reimagine how music and performance can converge. The works emerging from this model are engaging and complex. In each case the presentation mode and format emerges out of a deep consideration of the relationship between form and content, expression and reception.
Chamber Made acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and pays its respects to their Elders past and present.
